Chapter Nine

Kirk leaned against the massive concrete pillar watching the passengers queue up to the baggage carousel, waiting for their bags, although he doubted Diana would be one of them. He figured her more for a carry-on type of gal. In the distance he spotted her glorious auburn hair first before the rest of her came into view.

She was dressed in dark jeans and an oversized sweater of pale lavender, which hugged her breasts and flared away from her hips. Around her neck was a necklace with multiple dark purple stones layered to look like flowers. Her cheeks were flushed and she was talking animatedly into her cell phone, rolling a purple suitcase behind her. Yep, he'd been right. That had definitely fit in the overhead carry-on compartment.

A few more seconds and she'd be close enough to spot him. He felt a bit like a stalker, but her friend Gloria had called him earlier and given him Diana's flight information, asked him to meet her at the airport. The way she'd worded the request, he wondered if Diana knew her friend even called him.

“Diana?”

Her eyes flew up to meet his and she froze. The suitcase clattered to a stop behind her. Her pretty blue eyes widened in surprise.

“Hi.”

He smiled. He couldn't help himself. With her standing in front of him, he couldn't get over how pretty she was, even prettier than he remembered. And he remembered every detail about her, right down to the little butterfly-shaped beauty mark under her left breast.

“Um, how'd you know I was here—wait, Gloria called you, didn't she?” She muttered under her breath, “The dirty rat.”

“Don't blame her. I've been trying to get in touch with you for days. We need to talk, don't you agree?” He waited, watched the indecision race across her face followed by resignation.

“I guess we do.”

“Here, let me get that.” He picked up her suitcase, which wasn't all that heavy, and placed a hand on the small of her back, guiding her out through the doors and to his parked truck. He loved his pickup, even though it probably wasn't the most practical vehicle for the windy twisty roads of congested San Francisco. Not that it really mattered, he needed the extra leg room. Most of the time he used his car when he had a passenger, but he'd been at work and hadn't had time to rush home and switch out vehicles.

“Wow, this is yours?” Diana walked around, inspecting every inch of his Ford F-150 with its shiny red exterior and tan leather seats. “I love it. Between you and me, I've always wanted one, only I'd get it in black.” She grinned up at him, her blue eyes twinkling.

She loves pickup trucks? Well, wasn't she just full of surprises?

“Where would you like to talk?”

She scrunched up her cute little nose, and he backtracked. Obviously she still wasn't ready to share too much information with him. He needed to earn her trust.

“If you're not in a hurry, how about we stop for a bite? I've been working all night, and I'd enjoy your company.
